So it was 20 years ago and I lived on my own. I have a family of 4 married brothers and sisters plus my mother and father. Each year the same situation arose, who should I have Christmas dinner with?
All my brothers and sisters have their own families, so there was no big Christmas Dinner at my mother and fathers. The obvious candidate was for me to go to my mother and fathers house, however I always received invitations from my brothers and sisters.
I drove to Mams and had a a very nice dinner, being careful to eat smaller portions of everything. This raised Mams suspicions because she knew I had a good appetite. I managed to pass it off by saying I was going to a neighbors' later and would be having something there.
I said I had to leave to rest before the evening event. I drove 2 miles to my sisters and went through the same process. By this time eating all that was offered was challenging. I managed morsels of sweets and just managed to make my excuses.
It was a tough drive to my brother's house. I was more fortunate in this case in that his wife is of Irish descent. They have large family Christmas Dinners. This was my saving, my eating of small portions went completely unnoticed. However I was beginning to feel quite ill towards the end.
As most of the guest started to doze, thank goodness for Turkey!, I made my excuses - the evening event and left.
I got home put on the TV closed my eyes and the phone rang. It was my neighbors who said, "Would you like to come round for an evening bit of something to eat?"
